Finding beer isn't hard. Finding good beer isn't hard. Finding the good beer that you want... now that can be challenging. Here are some of our favorite limited batch brews.
Firestone Walker Parabola (Imperial Stout) - 14% ABV/ Beer Advocate Score: 100
This Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout brewed by Firestone Walker Brewing Co. in Paso Robles, California is aged for 8 months in circa 1990's Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. This mammoth of a beer is available in March but is only released in limited quantities. Stores that offer Firestone Walker's limited selection will likely carry Parabola so keep an eye out.
Three Floyds Dark Lord (Imperial Stout) - 15% ABV / Beer Advocate Score: 95
This beer seems more like a novelty drink you might find at Comic-Con but this Imperial Stout is no joke. A gigantic Russian Imperial brewed with vanilla, molasses and Dark Matter coffee, Three Floyds Brewing Co. out of Munster, Indiana knows how to brew. This beer is available one day a year (Dark Lord Day) at the brewery in late April.
Maine Beer Company Dinner (Double IPA) - 8.20% ABV / Beer Advocate Score: 100
This super-hoppy double IPA is similar to the Lunch IPA brewed throughout the year except with more hops and flavor. Maine Beer Company in Freeport, Maine knows how to brew and is one of our favorite breweries in the Northeast. The folks up in Freeport release this batch about four times a year and will announce on their Instagram account when they plan to do so. Dinner IPA is sold exclusively at the brewery in 500 mililiter bottles. Hundreds of people have been known to line up (sometimes overnight!) to experience this delicious brew. The next release will be in April.
The Alchemist Heady Topper (Double IPA) - 8% ABV / Beer Advocate Score: 100
I've said it here before but Heady Topper is a staple when traveling in Northern Vermont. One of only two beers brewed by the Alchemist in Waterbury, Vermont, it has been rated one of the best beers in the world on Beer Advocate and for good reason. It is amazing. One sip fills your taste buds with an incredible wave of flavors associated with hops: rose, raspberry, thyme, grapefruit and more. You can get this beer all year long but be warned it is not easy to get your hands on. We recommend following their schedule on their website to see which store/ bar/ restaurant gets it when.
Tree House Brewing Company Julius (American IPA) - 6.8% ABV / Beer Advocate Score: 100
If you haven't tried any of Tree House Brewing Co's offerings you're really missing out. Located in Monson, Massachusetts, this brewery was founded in 2011 and is quickly making a name for themselves. Their beer is only available in a limited number of bars or located at their brewery. Their beers move quickly so they suggest arriving early to ensure a spot in the queue.
